Cedars-Sinai Research Bioinformatician IV - Cedars-Sinai Cancer Bioinformatics Core in West Hollywood, California
The Cedars-Sinai Cancer Bioinformatics Core, directed by Dr. Sungyong You, is looking for a talented candidate who is going to serve as the Research Bioinformatician IV. This core will provide state-of-the-art bioinformatics services and consulting, proposing the best practice of existing computational pipelines, mathematical modeling, statistical analysis methods, and machine learning approaches.
Research Bioinformatician IV will be responsible for managing some aspects of the Bioinformatics core, they will collaborate independently with biomedical researchers in implementing and designing studies. Major responsibilities are in driving improvement in the software development process, gather input from users to create plans for future development, establish system-level requirements and design and implement core system components. The Research Bioinformatician IV will serve as the primary collaborator the development of data visualization software and analysis algorithms for data intensive problems. Research Bioinformatician IV will also work with bioinformatics faculties to determine future bioinformatics needs, and helps to develop tools and pipelines as necessary to keep pace with rapid advances in sequencing technology. The Bioinformatician IV will demonstrate continuous self-improvement, make effective contributions to the section, and adhere to CSHS compliance plan, code of conduct, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Acts as a team lead to include overseeing the work of others, assigning or allocating work to team, and ensuring tasks are completed according to deadlines and quality standards.
Manages day to day aspects of the Bioinformatics Core and supervises staff as it relates to the overall services and business development management of the program. Also contributes to the strategic planning, design, development, implementation, and financial management of program objectives, procedures, processes and standards.
Lead designing and implementing multi-omics research projects and mainly responsible for data analysis and software compilations including next generation sequence alignment, polymorphism identification, expression analysis, and visualization tools and browsers.
Summarizes and visualizes data analyses results in the form suitable as the basis for the first draft of written reports, and makes preliminary interpretations of the data.
Advises staff on research and clinical issues and shares oversight, safety, and marketing of facility, equipment, and IT together with technical directors and administrative leadership. Advises researchers on new project start-up and resolves complex issues.
Advises researchers and staff on research project planning and execution, including study budgets, staffing, regulatory, coordination, and data management activities. Participates in scientific discussions and bridges research and Core teams with collaborators and other internal/external research and clinical teams.
In conjunction with leadership, responsible for planning and managing program fiscal budgets and financials.
Develop, test, and maintain modular software pipelines for genome sequencing, assembly, annotation, metagenomic analysis, and genotyping using high-throughput sequencing platforms including 454, Illumina, and Pacific Biosciences
Manages data including loading and querying data from database systems, downloading omic data from public repositories, and transforming data to the necessary formats
Make oral presentations at professional/scientific meetings, workshops, and seminar series.
Identify, evaluate, and incorporate relevant algorithms and software pipelines by reviewing pertinent literatures in bioinformatics and computational biology
Assists or collaborate in preparation of grant proposals, publications, and presentations involving omic data
Supervise the work of lower level Research Bioinformaticians and Analyst/Programmers serving on the same projects.
Educate others about bioinformatics through mentoring of and teaching colleagues, investigators, fellows, and graduate students. Creates and fosters a collaborative and positive relationship building dynamic with internal faculty/staff and external agencies/organizations. May be responsible for developing and implementing any applicable education, training, on-boarding and/or mentorship pertaining to the program.

Master of Science Degree in Biology, Computer Science, Electric Engineering, Computational biology, or Bioinformatics, or Master of Science/ Engineering in relevant fields (e.g. Biology with strong quantitative training, biostatistics with concentration in bioinformatics), Required
PhD in Systems Biology, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a directly related field of research specialization, Preferred
10- 14 years experience in research environment.
Background and work knowledge in algorithms, scientific computing, and machine learning or statistics
Familiar with C/C++, Java, Perl, python, R, and the Unix (Linux) environment
Experiences in manipulating, analyzing, and annotating genomic (e.g. NGS) and proteomics data sets both in exploratory and pipelined fashions
