Summary of Essential Job Duties:

The Director is responsible for the oversight of operations of the departments, for which they have responsibility, including clinical practice, human resource management, fiscal accountability, productivity, and regulatory compliance. She/he will exhibit leadership, humanism and professionalism in the management of his/her department. She/he demonstrates motivation and creativity and serve as a catalyst for effective changes.

Responsibilities include Radiological, Biological, Chemical, Laser, Employee and Environmental Safety, Medical Physics, Hazardous Waste Disposal, Emergency Management, and Ecological Alternatives. Acts as the Safety Officer. See attached addendum for Safety Officer Responsibilities.

Essential Functions

•As Safety Officer, oversee programs, methods and means in order to assure a safe environment for the staff, visitors and patients, manages the Safety Management Committee Activities and coordinates the CAL-OSHA reports.

•Assure compliance with the policies and permit requirements from various agencies that govern the aspects of operations under the purview of the Executive Director.

•Forge and maintain relations of trust with external authorities, e.g. City, State and Federal regulators.

•Provide oversight for the Medical Physics compliance and image quality improvement activities, patient dosimetry and counseling, and manages the Radiation Safety Committee activities.

•Provide direction for the Research Laboratory Safety program for Radioactive/Chemical/Bio Hazards, including hazardous material lab permits, safety audits, waste management and spill response

•Provide oversight for Emergency response activities and preparedness, coordinate with the LA County EMS program for Disaster Center and Special Pathogen Treatment Centers.

•Supervises unit employees, including responsibility for determining qualifications, hiring, maintaining and improving competence, assigning work, coaching, training (e.g., orientation, in-service and continuing education), evaluating performance, compensation, discipline and terminating employment.

•Builds an effective team of leaders by providing guidance and coaching to management team.

•Assumes fiscal responsibility for the unit including unit budget preparation, labor and supply cost management, and revenue enhancement.

•Collaborates with other directors and clinical/support directors in cross-functional process improvement, collaborative teamwork, open communication and problem solving to ensure the effective coordination and integration of services within and between units.

Educational Requirements:

MS required, PhD preferred. MS Environmental Health and Safety fields, Radiation Physics or similar field. PhD in related field preferred.

Experience:

5 years in a leadership role in Environmental Health and Safety. 10 years actual experience with at least 5 years in a high-level Management role
