Cedars-Sinai Postdoctoral Scientist - Sergei Grivennkov Lab - Cancer Institute in Los Angeles, California

Sergei Grivennikov Lab:

Working independently but in close cooperation and in consultation with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientist, the Research Fellow will perform routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period in the field of cancer biology. May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols. Analyzes and interprets data. May assist in preparation of grant proposals. Responsible for designing experiments, assembling data for publications and presentations as author or co-author. Not responsible for generating grant funds.   

Department Responsibilities:

  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals but is not responsible for generating grant funds.

  • Responsible for the design of experiments in cooperation with the mentor.

  • Responsible for compiling figures and text for the submission of publications and presentations as author or co-author.

  • Designs and performs experiments. Will keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the mentor.

  • May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols.

  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.

  • Operates and maintains equipment and instruments.

Department Specific Responsibilities:

-Conform to standards of responsible conduct of research and adheres to standards regarding use of isotope, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects and the like. Ability to work independently with minimal guidance is essential.

  • Follows established protocol with precision and ability to establish new protocols and techniques with a minimal guidance.

-Understand the principles of molecular biology, biochemistry and immunology needed to perform the experiments needed to address immune mechanisms controlling anti-cancer immunity. Molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and immunology college-level coursework is necessary to adhere to these requirements. Knowledge in basic bioinformatics is preferable.

-Demonstrating a working familiarity with common techniques including

basic chemistry (including pH, solubility and concentrations)-required for laboratory solutions preparation.

-Basic microbiology (including cell transfection and transformation, mammalian cell culture and sterile technique)-required for conducting in vitro cell culture pre-clinical studies of cancer development. Microbiology and Cell biology college –level course is required to be able to perform such experiments.

-Basic molecular biology (including cloning, DNA sequencing, RNA, DNA and protein isolation, Western blotting-required to access gene and protein expression changes in normal and cancer cells in pre-clinical studies. Molecular biology college –level course is required to be able to perform such experiments.

-Basic immunostainings (including histology immunostaining and well as flow cytometry analysis of immune cell composition in isolated tumors and normal tissues)-required for characterization of immune cell composition in in vivo animal models and human samples. Essential for pre-clinical studies. Immunology college –level course is required to be able to perform such experiments.

-Ability to work with a literature to identify appropriate research protocols needed to complete current work.

-Follows established methods for meticulously recording all experimental parameters, reagents used, pitfalls encountered, protocol steps, results and conclusions for each experiment in a standard lab notebook.

-Uses basic math and statistical tests to logically analyze experimental findings. Have basic bioinformatics knowledge in large data sets analysis (including data analysis from RNA sequencing) is a plus.

-Uses Excel and PowerPoint to analyze and communicate findings

-Communicate the results of experiments with the Principal Investigator and other lab members. Ability to present the research data at institutional seminars.

-Writes the methods and results section of a publication based on their own work.

-Participates in planning experiments and defining project goals. Ability to work independently.

-Attends appropriate scientific and technical seminars to stay ahead of advances in techniques, new equipment, protocols and frontline research in the field of study and perform these duties only with a minimal guidance.

Educational Requirements:

Doctorate Degree (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in in biomedical sciences, pharmacology, or an area directly related to field of research specialization, with demonstrable laboratory experience in drug discovery and natural products research, and in vivo mouse models for antitumor efficacy and pharmacology, required.

Experience:

  • Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization.

  • Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.

  • Experience as a first author in one or more publications on impactful body of work.

  • Demonstrable laboratory experience (1-4 years) in drug discovery and natural products research, in vivo mouse work, antitumor efficacy, and pharmacology, with some experience in molecular biology, tumor cell biology, microbiology, and protein purification and production.

  • Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment.

  • Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment.

  • Ability to function in a team environment and use interpersonal skills to communicate effectively.
