Cedars-Sinai Postdoctoral Scientist - Metabolism / Neuroscience in Los Angeles, California

Summary of Essential Job Duties:

The laboratory of Dr Celine Riera in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Center for Neural Sciences and Medicine at Cedars-Sinai has an opening for a Postdoctoral Associate to work in the field of neurobiology, and/or endocrinology (obesity) utilizing mouse models and cell culture. The lab's research is aimed at elucidating fundamental neural circuits regulating metabolic balance upon obesity, diabetes and the aging process. Perturbations in nutrient signaling pathways that affect insulin metabolism have been largely implicated in repressing health and mammalian lifespan. As a consequence, both aging and the metabolic syndrome are associated with the development of glucose intolerance, the impairment of insulin sensitivity, promoting fat metabolism and systemic damage from fat storage. Research in the lab investigates the role of neuropeptides secreted by a subset of chemosensory neurons from the dorsal root ganglia in metabolic health and longevity (Riera et al., Cell 2014). Another important avenue of research in the lab focuses on communication between olfactory neurons and central neurons regulating energy balance such as hypothalamic or brainstem neurons (Riera et al., Cell Metabolism 2017)


Independently works on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within an area of specialization. Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectives during one to five (1-5) year postdoctoral appointment. Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment. Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment. Technical duties will include molecular and cellular biology, endocrinology, neurobiology and murine genetics. Experience in mouse metabolism, and/or neurobiology is preferred but not required. Experience in working with mice is preferred. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, curious, with excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently.

Educational Requirements:

PhD OR MD/PhD in area directly related to field of research specialization.
