Summary of Essential Job Duties:

The Associate Director is responsible for the planning, organizing, directing and controlling the daily operations and clinical practice of The Pancreatic-Biliary and Small Bowel & Nutrition programs associated with the Center for Digestive Diseases to provide quality, individualized patient care in accordance with Medical Center philosophies. The Associate Director assumes fiscal responsibility through preparation of unit budgets, serves as liaison with medical staff and other personnel, promotes the maximum growth and development of each employee, supports faculty practice and productivity, clinical and translational research, participates in strategic planning, both long and short term, and assures patient advocacy. The Associate Director is accountable to the Executive Director, Department of Medicine. The Associate Director guides nursing staff in the provision of nursing care consistent with Nursing Standards of Care/Practice, the Plan for Provision of Nursing Care, The Plan for Provision of Patient Care, CSMC Code of Conduct, the Performance Improvement Plan, the Patient Education Plan and Professional Organization Standards. He/she maintains competency skills including the ability to provide care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds. He/she can identify the ability of the adolescent, adult and geriatric patients to follow direction/instructions and give consent. He/she can identify safety concerns and institute measures to provide a safe environment and provide appropriate assessment, intervention and evaluation of patients with consideration of developmental milestones in the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population. The Associate Director is responsible for assuring staff competency in provision of age related patient care.

Essential Functions:

•Responsible for oversight and administration of Center for Digestive Diseases operations including outpatient clinic(s) and nutrition program.

•Work collaboratively with CSMC faculty physicians to deliver safe, high quality, and fiscally responsible care.

•Coordinate clinical and administrative staffing mix, staffing levels, and competencies to ensure safe and effective service delivery.

•Collaborate with DOM Research administrators to support and achieve clinical and translational research mission of the GI Center for Excellence.

•Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies (TJC, CMS, CDPH) to ensure compliance with CSMC policy and regulatory requirements.

•Manage human resource, labor relations, employee and department safety, and risk management issues.

•Achieve financial objectives by preparing annual capital and operation budgets; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.

•Contribute to team effort by supporting patient care as needed


Qualification Requirements/Preferences:

Education Certifications/Licensure Experience Physical Abilities Educational Requirements:

•Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree required; Master’s degree in MSN, MPH, MHA, or MBA required.

•Meet specialty specific clinical competencies for assigned area.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements:

•Graduate of an accredited nursing school.

•Valid California Registered Nurse License required.

•BLS Certification required.

•Specialty certification in field of practice required within one year of hire.


•Minimum two (2) years management experience in ambulatory care or GI Lab operations or other relevant clinical experience. Prior experience in gastroenterology diseases and vascular access / total parenteral nutrition highly desirable.

•Working knowledge of facility and professional billing practices.

•Strong understanding of healthcare finance and variables affecting reimbursement.

•Working knowledge of applicable Standards of Practice.

•Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of health care technology within specialty area. Experience with EPIC Systems (EMR) strongly preferred.

•Demonstrated commitment to customer service excellence and an ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients and health care colleagues.

•Excellent command (verbal and written) of the English language.

•Experience with performance improvement methods (PDSA) methodology.

•Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
