Orthopedic Technician is an allied health professional that supports the Physician, nursing staff and Medical Assistants in the delivery of health care by performing a variety of patient care duties and tasks related to orthopedic patient needs.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists Physician, NP or PA in assessment of signs, symptoms, analysis, treatment and care of the orthopedic patient.
Under instruction, provide education involving the care and plan of treatment of the patient. (i.e accurate care of cast and splints).
Assists with application and execution of orthopedic procedures and services concerning the orthopedic patient: Apply and remove all types of casts, splints, slings, immobilization devices and traction; Assist with reduction of fractures and dislocation; Inspect and adjust bandages and equipment needed for orthopedic care; In the event of an emergency, apply recognized first aid procedures; Assist with aspirations; Prepare injections; Position, prep and drape patients; Apply and manage post-operative dressings on wounds following aseptic techniques; Fit various orthopedic equipment such as walkers, crutches, braces and providing patient instruction.
Prepare patients for provider by reviewing current medications and record in medical record as needed.
Sets up exam room/procedure rooms appropriately based on patient visit needs and takes appropriate vital signs.
Performs designated diagnostic tests as advised by provider.
Assists in follow-up scheduling needs. Answer patient calls, questions and addresses problems in timely manner.
Communicates all significant clinical findings to MD.
Serves as liaison with other departments, facilities, and hospital as needed.
Vocational/Technical diploma from Orthopedic Technology program required.
Certification from National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologist (NBCOT) required.
BLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
Two (2) years or more of experience in outpatient medical setting with Orthopedic specialty background.
