Job Posting: The Medical Lab Assistant (MLA) in Anatomic Pathology functions in this entry-level position with the direct supervision of senior technical/clinical personnel. Responsibilities include collecting/receiving, transporting, processing and filing Anatomic Pathology slides, blocks, specimen and patient requisitions. MLA serves as a problem-solving resource when troubleshooting the location of materials and provides support to autopsy services and specimen discard. Additionally, MLA provides routine operational and support functions such as coordinating the disposition of materials and equipment, collecting, receiving, processing and distributing laboratory specimens and performing tasks ancillary to the production of laboratory test results. Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the age and developmental issues of the patient population(s) being served.
Education Certifications/Licensure Experience Physical Abilities Educational Requirements:
High school diploma or its equivalent.
Laboratory experience, including familiarity with laboratory information systems, preferred. Computer competency comprised of a working knowledge of Windows or a comparable system. Experience demonstrating the ability to handle multiple tasks frequently with short time-lines, to prioritize and organize work, and to complete assignments in a timely, accurate manner. Appropriate interpersonal skills for interacting with peers, patients, physicians and other customers of the Medical Center. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
Frequent sitting, standing and walking and bending; occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds for distances to 10 feet. Exposure to minimum but constant noise levels.
Daily functions may include incidental exposure to hazards associated with:
o automation: close proximity to moving mechanical parts
o chemicals: (reagents, carcinogens, radioactivity materials, corrosives, flammables and fumes)
o patient specimens, microorganisms, and sharps.
Responsiveness to auditory alarms and communicating devices including: telephones, beepers, fire alarms, mechanical failure alarms. Visual acuity acceptable to performing duties of this position.
